For the Audacious BIPOC exhibition celebrating Women’s Month, Thurees Obenza presented three photographic works: A Woman’s Place is Wherever the Hell She Wants It to Be!, Sugar, Spice, and Reproductive Rights, and a still life featuring lipsticks arranged around a chessboard.
Working primarily with objects and staged compositions, Thurees' photographs explore themes of autonomy, femininity, and power. Cosmetics, sweets, and game pieces become symbolic props—objects that feel playful at first glance but carry deeper commentary about women’s agency and the spaces they claim for themselves.
Audacious brought together artists from diverse backgrounds, creating a collective platform where identity, resistance, and personal narratives could intersect. For Thurees, the exhibition reinforced something she often explores in her practice: that still life photography can be political, and that everyday objects can hold complex social conversations.
