MEET THUREES
Thurees is a Filipino photographer and set stylist based in Gothenburg, Sweden. She is the founder of Sunny East Side Photo Studio and works across photography, still life, installation, and material-based practices. Her work is known for bold color, graphic compositions, and a tactile, hands-on approach to image-making that balances precision with subtle tension.
Originally trained through commercial product photography in Manila, Thurees’ practice has since expanded into more research-driven work centered on food, found objects, and domestic materials. She is drawn to items that are worn, discounted, thrifted, or in the process of being discarded, treating them as both subject and material. Food appears frequently in her work— not only as an image, but as something revered and transformed.
Alongside photography, she maintains a strong making practice. Thurees regularly builds, repairs, and repurposes props, sets, furniture, and sculptural elements using thrifted materials, vintage objects, and hardware-store finds. Her process often includes woodworking, basic carpentry, sewing, surface refinishing, and adapting found items into functional or photographic tools and art installations. This material-driven approach allows her to construct scenes that feel lived-in, intentional, and quietly charged.
Her work moves between commercial and artistic contexts, spanning cosmetics, beauty, product, advertising, and editorial photography, while also developing installation-based and exhibition work rooted in food culture and materiality. Across all formats, Thurees’ practice explores playfulness, intimacy, usefulness, and vulnerability, lingering in the space where everyday objects are treated with care and attention.
