Solo window work

Foreign Object

Galleri 54 Peepshow, Gothenburg

From 22 May to 14 June 2026, Foreign Object is on show in the window of Galleri 54 Peepshow, presented as a photograph that hangs behind the real version of itself: a real tomato and metal tools that decay over the exhibition period. What does it mean to be a foreign object? Thurees thinks of wooden splinters lodged in her fingers, and the way the body lets you know when something does not belong.

Still Good, Still Life vol. iii: The Threat of Intimacy

Street gallery window, Chalmersgatan 4, HDK-Valand, Gothenburg

With The Threat of Intimacy, Thurees presented the third exhibition in her ongoing Still Good, Still Life series, this time in a street gallery window display. Unlike traditional gallery exhibitions, the window format meant the photographs were encountered by people simply passing by. Commuters, pedestrians, and curious onlookers often stopped to look and ask questions about the work.

Audacious BIPOC

Galleri Rotor2, Teatergatan 5, HDK-Valand, Gothenburg

For the Audacious BIPOC exhibition celebrating Women's Month, Thurees presented three photographic works: A Woman's Place is Wherever the Hell She Wants It to Be!, Sugar, Spice, and Reproductive Rights, and a still life featuring lipsticks arranged around a chessboard. Working primarily with objects and staged compositions, her photographs explore themes of autonomy, femininity, and power.

Still Good, Still Life vol. ii: Food as a Ritual

EAT: Food, Culture, Design and Materiality, HDK-Valand, Gothenburg

Food as a Ritual was presented as part of the EAT: Food, Culture, Design and Materiality course, where students developed individual artistic projects exploring food from personal and cultural perspectives. For this exhibition, Thurees continued developing Still Good, Still Life, focusing on the repetitive gestures and routines that shape everyday relationships with food.

Still Good, Still Life vol. i: Value and Visibility

HDK-Valand Café, Gothenburg

The Value & Visibility exhibition marked the first public presentation of Still Good, Still Life, an ongoing photographic series. The series focuses on food sourced from discounted grocery bags: produce that is still edible but often overlooked due to appearance, timing, or expiration dates. Through carefully staged still life photography, Thurees asks viewers to reconsider how value is assigned to everyday food.

Remembrances

Rotor 2 Galleri, Valand, Gothenburg

Remembrances, curated by Juliana Goméz and Esther Dullinger, was a group exhibition at Rotor 2 Galleri, Valand, where Thurees exhibited along with fellow HDK-Valand students. She showed Echoes of My Dreams (2023), a photograph that represents the vividness and repetitive nature of her dreams: a framed photograph superimposed in front of several copies of the same photograph, altered with techniques like paper manipulation.

About * Meet the studio

Every object deserves its close-up.

Sunny East Side is a content studio in Gothenburg, founded by photographer and stylist Thurees Obenza. It started in Manila, shooting beauty and food for brands like Maybelline and L'Oréal, and moved to Sweden along with a frankly unreasonable prop collection.

We have a soft spot for anything worn, thrifted, discounted, or one step from the bin. A wonky tomato, a 1970s telephone, a lipstick that's seen things. Give it the right light and it will outshine anything brand new.

We plan the strategy, build the sets, shoot the stills and reels, and keep your feed fed. And when the shoot wraps, we're probably cooking dinner for twelve.

When she steps out from behind the camera, she goes in front of it. Thurees is a plus-size commercial model and actor, booked by brands like Maybelline, Dove, and L'Oréal.

Styled events

Intimate dinners and small parties, styled from the invitations down to the napkin rings, with tablescapes and arrangements built from found objects. And we cook the food too: every day, without fail. It's our love language.

Risfolk

At home in Gothenburg

A Filipino rice dinner for friends, with every grain of it made by hand. We styled the table as a forest floor of moss, stones, mushrooms, and ginger roots, designed the menus, place cards, and matchboxes, and cooked every course: samalamig sa sago to start, champorado with daing, sisig on crispy rice (with a vegan mushroom adobo), then turon mille-feuille, biko, and galletas. The matchboxes read: I stole this from Risfolk.

Good questions

FAQ

What does Sunny East Side do?

Sunny East Side is a social media content house run by Thurees Obenza. We make product photography, reels and TikToks, built sets, prop styling, and cosmetic styling for beauty and food brands, and we style small events.

Where are you based? Do you travel?

We moved the studio from Manila to Sweden, and we're now at Berghemsgatan 12 in Mölndal, just outside Gothenburg. We shoot on location too, in Sweden and worldwide.

How much does a shoot cost?

Every project gets its own quote, because a clean packshot and a fully built set are very different days. Tell us about the product, the launch date, where the content will live, and roughly what you'd like to spend, and we'll come back with ideas and one clear price.

Do you make video as well as photos?

Yes. We shoot stills and video on the same set, so your photos, reels, and TikToks all match.

Do you source the props?

Yes. Props are sourced from flea markets, thrift shops, and our own collection, or built by hand when the thing we need doesn't exist yet.

What kinds of products do you shoot?

Mostly beauty, skincare, cosmetics, food, and drink, plus lifestyle products that want to look loud, playful, and colourful.

How do I get my products to you?

You send samples to the studio before the shoot. Please send spares: something always gets smudged.

Can I join the shoot?

On location shoots, yes, you're welcome on set. Studio days are closed sets: we work on our own, and you sign off on the moodboard and shot list before we start.

Can I use the images anywhere?

We agree up front where and how you'll use the content, and it's written into the quote, so there are no surprises later.

Do you style events?

Yes, small ones: intimate dinners, birthday suppers, launch evenings, and parties at home. Tablescapes, found-object arrangements, printed details, and sometimes the food too.

How far ahead should I book?

As early as you can, especially around launches and holidays. Tell us your deadline and we'll plan backwards from it.
